Types of Heart & Vascular Diseases

In the world of diseases affecting humans every day, cardiovascular diseases are among the leading ones which are known to lead to death. It is not always that a person’s lifestyle could result in such form of diseases, as some of these medical conditions could also be genetic.

Vascular diseases are the ones which affect the veins, arteries and capillaries around the heart and the entire body. Generally, the arteries become narrow, and this reduces the blood flow in the body, which then leads to the abnormal behavior of the bodily organs, eventually leading to fatal consequences. Various types of diseases can affect the vascular system and the heart. Read the following points to know them and how they work.

 1) Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia is a condition, which refers to the abnormal sequence of the heartbeat. It only involves the impulses of the heart and has nothing to do with the arteries or any form of blockage. When there is a variation in the pace of the heartbeat, it slows down the pumping of blood to the brain, lungs and various other vital organs, causing them to slowly shut down.

 2) Heart Attack

Commonly known as “Myocardial Infarction”, a heart attack is known to occur when the blood flow to the heart is completely cut off or reduced. It usually occurs as the result of the narrowing and hardening of the coronary arteries due to the build-up of cholesterol, plaque, fat and other substances. The clot created causes a complete stop of blood flow which then causes the death of that specific part of the heart muscle.

 3) Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is one of the reasons which is known to contribute towards heart failures. Such a condition causes the heart to enlarge and thicken, which then limits the hearts muscles ability to pump blood at a normal rate to the vital organs of the body to function.

 4) Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

Coronary Artery Disease involves atherosclerosis in which the hardening and narrowing of the coronary arteries and blockage in the blood vessels occur. This form of diseases is known to happen over time as it slowly blocks the arteries, thus limiting the blood flow to the heart. The disease leads to heart failures, heart attacks, peripheral vascular disease and stroke.

 5) Congenital Heart Defects

This is one form of defect in which the treatment might only be required based on the severity of the condition. This form of defect is present since birth and is hence not classified as a disease. It is a form of abnormality that occurs when the fetus is still developing in the womb. This form of defect could be the leakage of heart valves or even the formation of walls in the heart which separate the heart from its chambers.
