Candid is a company offering teeth straightening services performed in the comfort of your own home. Like most of its rivals, Candid uses molded clear aligners to gradually put pressure on your teeth and push them into a straighter position. Other popular services like this include names such as Byte, Invisalign, and Smile Direct Club.
In this Candid review, we’re going to look at how the company works, how much it costs, and whether the teeth aligners are worth it.
Looking to try Candid teeth straightening? Consider the following:
- You must be 16 or older
- You should have no baby teeth or permanent retainers
- It won’t be suitable if you need bite correction or you have dental work scheduled
- Not suitable if you have gum disease
- Not suitable if you suffer from excessive teeth crowding
What To Expect
Candid is only really suitable for those who don’t have excessively crowded or crooked teeth. As such, it might not be suitable for everyone. If you’re not sure whether your teeth are okay for Candid, the initial consultation will let you know.
Nonetheless, always visit your dentist first to rule out the possibilities of any underlying issues. For example, if a wisdom tooth needs to come out of you’ve got some unknown cavities, you need to know about them first.
Visiting The Candid Studio
A technician with the relevant expertise will perform the necessary steps to create a 3D model for you. A designated orthodontist will also be assigned to you at this time. Candid Studio locations are situated in 7 US states plus DC, so they’re not exactly available to everyone.
We don’t all live in California!
Take your guardian along if you are under 18. Make sure you are showing up at your appointment, but you can even go as a walk-in. However, it is always a good idea to reserve a spot. Based on your smile model, you can receive a treatment plan. Don’t forget to sign the consent form.
The studio visit should take 30 minutes, though I personally was there for almost 50 minutes, making me late for a later appointment. It appears that the appointments don’t always run on time, so keep that in mind.
Ordering a Starter Kit Online
You can take your own impressions and photos once your starter kit arrives. You can call a Customer Service Representative if you’re unsure, though I had a hard time getting through and had to wait for a long time. They make it sound easy, but I found the whole process to be a pain in the ass.
If you have to redo the impressions of your teeth, you can get another package without additional charges, which is one of the few good things about Candid Co. In the kit, you can expect a cheek stretcher, putty, trays, poker tool, gloves, a prepaid return box, and relevant instructions in your starter kit package.
To take your impressions in the correct way, make sure you set aside 40 minutes. There is an instructional video by Candid that can help you further if you’re struggling.
Your treatment plan is designed by a dentist or orthodontist, based on your dental records. If you decide to go to the Candid Studio, you can expect the result in 5 days while if you go for the starter kit then you can expect 4 to 5 weeks depending on whether it is approved or not.
If you are in a hurry, it would be best to visit a Candid Studio, though it might not be an option for most people in the US (only 7 states have physical locations).
You can expect the following from your treatment plan:
- The average treatment can last up to 6 months.
- Your bone biology is important. Your health and safety matters!
- You can expect 11 months of treatment
When you get your plan you can get information from your dentist or orthodontist regarding the time to wear each set, a number of aligners you get, treatment duration, a 3D model depicting your journey in various steps, and an option to select your payment method.
Work On Your Smile
After the approval of your plan, you will be able to get the Candid Co straightening kit. Usually, it will take around three weeks for approval. You can expect chewies, a tool to remove the aligners, an app-enabled scanner, whitening foam, a cheek stretcher, an aligner case, and of course the custom aligners designed specifically for you!
The packets of your aligners are labeled as the “first step” and “step two” etc so you have to select them accordingly. The aligners are BPA free and also free of phthalate. They’re also supposed to be stain-resistant, though I personally found that my aligners would stain if I drank a lot of coffee (which I regularly do!)
Starting The Treatment
The treatment starts once you would first wear the aligners. At this point, it’s important for you to follow the relevant instructions. Keep the following things in mind:
- You have to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day. Take them out only to eat, drink, and brush your teeth.
- It would be a good idea to start your new pair at night, though it’s up to you.
- Make sure you clean your aligners! Always use cool water when you are cleaning the aligners. Make sure the water is never too hot or you can run into problems with the shape.
Comprehensive Assessment Of Treatment
You need not worry about visiting the orthodontist every now and then as remote monitoring is now possible. This means that a Candid Co dental specialist checks on your progress through their dedicated app. The app tends to crash a lot, which is annoying, but they get the images eventually.
Personally, I would prefer to visit studios in person, but when 43 states aren’t covered by studios, it leaves many customers without a choice. It’s also worth mentioning that remote monitoring costs extra, so customers in most of the country are punished further still.
If you’re not in one of these states, you’re probably better off using a service like Byte that is specifically designed to be used online only.
It is possible that you might get a lisp when using the aligners, so keep this in mind if you do public speaking. You might also feel the following:
- You can feel soreness. It would be expected when you are using a new set. You can expect it for the first few days – it can be very annoying.
- Your gums might be inflamed as well.
You can use the chewies to help with this. However, it is important for you to keep in mind that when you are using such a product for the first time, you can feel the discomfort, but you can always reach out to Candid support.
Wearing the Retainers
When you are at the end of your treatment, you will receive a package including a remover tool, whitening foam, chewies, retainer case, top, and bottom retainers.
You have to wear your retainers for 22 hours a day, which seems excessive to me personally. Some people wear them only at night, but it’s not ideal for keeping your teeth in the right position.
You can expect a harsher lisp with the retainers, so yeah… not great.
Switch the sets of retainers once every six months. You get the first set for free, but then you have to pay an additional cost of $99 for more. You can check the official website to see the updated price charges.
You can expect the following prices for Candid Co teeth straightening:
- The starter kit will cost you around $95, but a visit to a physical studio is free
- A one-time payment would cost you around $2400
- Instalment plan option of $399 down payment plus $99 for 24 months ($2,775 total)
- The cost of the retainers will be $99
- For the app-enabled scanner, the cost will be $350
You can choose to buy your aligners after your free scan. You can read more about the best invisible braces to choose the right ones for you. However, it would be interesting for you to know that the purchase would be refundable until you have approved the relevant treatment plan.
It’s worth mentioning that Candid is one of the more expensive teeth aligners companies in this space, especially considering all of their add-ons. Cheaper services like Byte cost just $1,895 and come with most the add-ons included, so I’d recommend Byte if you’re looking for a quicker, cheaper teeth straightening service.
Is Candid Co Better For You Or Smile Direct Club?
You might be thinking whether you should opt for Candid Co or Smile Direct (Read the full Smile Direct Club Review here).
In my opinion, neither is the best option for at home teeth straightening. If you’re looking for a cheap and reliable service that exclusively works with licensed US orthodontists, I would recommend Byte, which costs just $1,895.
Here is some upsides of Byte to consider when compared to Candid Co:
- Byte costs just $1,895
- Byte only works with US orthodontists (not dentists too)
- Byte uses the “HyperByte” device which uses HFV technology to speed up the process
- Byte doesn’t charge you for remote monitoring
- Byte’s orthodontists do remote checkups every 2 weeks
In any case, you are likely to get suitable results. However, it is important for you to select the most viable option in your opinion. You know what’s best for you. If the price is the main factor in making a decision, it would be best to make your budget, evaluate the pros and cons, and see for yourself what’s best.
Your purpose is to get straight teeth, now what path you choose to get those is your call! After all, you are the one who has to make the final decision.
However, if it was up to me, I would choose Byte.
Wrapping It Up
Nowadays, technology is such that it’s possible to get mouth scans even from the comfort of your own home.
You have many options to see what’s suitable, whether you use Candid Co, Byte, SDC, or any other service. Using the starter kit, aligners, and retainers, it would be possible to get the desired results.
However, it is important for you to keep in mind that the initial assessment would be important before moving on to the next steps. You can expect some discomfort, but that’s how it is unfortunately!
