NHS Dental Epidemiology Programme (NHS DEP) for England

This programme has been commissioned to support the collection, analysis and dissemination of reliable and robust information on the oral health needs of local populations.

The North West Public Health Observatory (NWPHO), The Dental Observatory (TDO) and key stakeholders including the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry (BASCD) are working together to generate intelligence to support a range of needs including World Class Commissioning.

2007/08 Survey of five-year-old children

This survey was completed following the publication of the survey of five year olds national standard protocol. The data has been quality assured and analysed and the results are now available.

2008/09 Survey of twelve-year-old children

This survey is currently underway following the publication of the survey of twelve year olds national standard protocol. Data cleaning is taking place prior to analysis and the results will be available in Spring 2010.

Proposed future surveys/actions for the National Dental Epidemiology Programme

2009/10 - An adult survey is currently being planned to complement the Adult Dental Health Survey commissioned by the Departments of Health in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

2010/11 - To support Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) our intention is to target key population groups both regionally and locally. As such a menu of protocols will be developed to ensure the quality and comparability of local surveys, further details will follow.

2011/12 - A survey of five year old children is planned as an update to the 2007/08 survey.
