Prejudice, racism and ignorance of other peoples'
cultures and beliefs, and the conflict and violence that
may arise from them, can have a negative impact on the
health and well being on individuals and communities.
Common
Ground adopts a preventive approach to these issues. Rather than tackling the
symptoms, it is better to cure the disease, and prevent it from appearing again.
This can be done by understanding and addressing the root causes of conflict and
aggression, in a similar way to conflict resolution techniques -intervening at a
deeper level to change attitudes and behaviours. Information and education are
integral parts of this process, as is seeing conflict resolution skills as an
important part of health and well being.

Learning
how to overcome conflict, prejudice and racism can only
have positive effect on our health and our lives by
reducing the physical and psychological damage of
conflict and violence. Common Ground North West believes
that mutual understanding, the appreciation of
differences and a culture of peace and peaceful
resolution of disputes should be encouraged in order to
counter the negative effects of hate and intolerance in
society.
