Introduction

The aim of NWCIS is to provide a high quality information and intelligence service for the North West of England, which comprises Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and South Cumbria.  NWCIS collects details on all residents of the North West Region who develop cancer and also on non-residents who receive treatment in hospitals within the Region.  NWCIS covers three cancer networks (Greater Manchester & Cheshire, Lancashire & South Cumbria and Merseyside & Cheshire) and is almost coterminous with the new North West Strategic Health Authority (NWSHA).  North Cumbria is part of the NWSHA but at present the Northern and Yorkshire Cancer Intelligence Service (NYCRIS) undertakes the cancer registration function.

The Merseyside and Cheshire Cancer Registry (MCCN) and the North Western Cancer Registry (NWCR) have recently combined to form NWCIS.  Though staff still work at two offices: one based at the University of Liverpool and the other at the Christie Hospital NHS Trust in Manchester, NWCIS works as one organisation in most respects.
